Types of Laptop Batteries:

Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) Batteries: These were the first rechargeable batteries manufactured for laptops. They were relatively inexpensive, had high output and versatile, because they could be used in a wide variety of products. However, NiCd batteries have now been abandoned by laptop manufacturers with the introduction of more efficient and lighter-weight batteries.

Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) Batteries: NiMH was a big improvement concerning power output, reliability, cost, safety and capacity. The “memory effect” was the only issue with NiMH batteries which require them to be fully discharged before recharging to gain maximum output. These batteries can still be found in older model laptops.

Lithium Ion (LiON): This type of batteries has become the most popular for laptops since the memory effect has been eliminated, and much lighter than the other two in weight. However, the market price is also the highest.

Battery Cycle:

One battery cycle is used every time a battery is charged or discharged. Technically speaking, it is defined as the number of cycles a battery can perform before its nominal capacity falls below 80% of its initial rated capacity. Lifetimes of 500 to 1200 cycles are typical. For example, NiCad battery has a cycle life of 500-1000 or more cycles.

Battery Run-Time:

Battery run-time depends on a number of factors. Most of the time, it is the design of, and the power demands made by the machine that determines the actual battery run-time. For example, use of the screen, the hard drive and other accessories will significantly influence the duration of the run-time.

What are Smart and Dumb Laptop Batteries:

Some laptop batteries are equipped with internal microprocessor circuits that help manage battery energy, set the charger to the correct charge algorithm, predict running time, or according to Smart Battery System (SBS) forum, provide a state-of-charge (SoC) indication. These batteries are called ‘Smart’ batteries. Those batteries termed as, ‘dumb’ do not have these features, may be just counterparts, or may function to provide power only.

The performance, capabilities and performance of laptop computers have for many years been lagging behind the desktop, but all that is changing.

Today’s advanced laptop computers are noted as having equal capabilities as modern desktop PCs, although there is often a noticeable time delay for the top models. Over the past decade, the difference in processing power and performance between laptop computers and desktops have narrowed considerably.

In the mid 90′s the difference was around three to six months. Customers today insist that their laptops have similar capabilities and specifications as their desktop and also demand more features and processing power. In other words they want the things that make mobile computing painless and hassle-free. As well as becoming a replacement for a desktop, the advanced laptop computer should provide the same flexibility in configurations and expandability.

As users became familiar with their laptops they demanded that their mobile computers have the same functionality as their desktops. Thus began the emergence of ever more faster processors, high resolution wide-screen displays, bigger hard drives and multiple external devices.

The advanced laptop computer of today features capabilities such as instant-on. Instant-on is a feature that allows users to put their laptop into a power-conserving state and later resume working exactly where they left off. Advanced laptop computers focus on size, power, compatibility and performance. Some of the main objectives of advanced laptop manufacturers are power management, performance and compatibility. These manufacturers are fully aware that their customers expect their products to not require frequent recharging. Power consumption must be managed wisely, otherwise the heat generated by the components could affect reliability, functionality and ultimately, customer satisfaction. Their products are also expected to achieve other goals, such as reliability, quality and user convenience.

The next decade could well see laptop development overtaking that of the desktop PC.

Today, Laptops are very common and most people take them to schools, work, and even travel. Portable Computers are great for just jumping online and very easy to use. The problem with portable electronics, is you are always looking for an outlet to plug it in or have a large battery to last you through those 14 hour flights.

As common as laptops are now, it is just as common to see individuals forgetting that the machine needs a little bit of help to run. Your laptop battery does not somehow manage to stay full as you work for hours at a time. Yet, many seem to think that their battery does just that. No matter how long they stay hunched over the machine, it will work.

A few times of having the laptop die will cure that fantasy.

In reality you have to keep charging your laptop. The advantages of having a laptop is that you can take it anywhere (but be sure to keep it close to some free wifi). Laptops do not require being plugged into the outlets all day and night. You just should expect that your laptop will need to every X hours where X depends on the size of the battery and usage of your laptop. If you are doing just web surfing your battery should last longer then if you are editing a video.

Newer laptops feature a symbol at the top of the screen that allows you to see just how much your battery is charged. The lower it drops, the less time you have. Many times people squeeze every minute of battery life just so they don’t have to plugin, which is good as you want to use your battery from a full charge to empty, but bad if you are working on an important document that you haven’t saved or backedup.

Laptop batteries have short life, most of them last between 18 and 24 months, which is expensive consdiering they cost around $100 to replace. If you pay attention, the battery can last longer by taking care of it such as not having it always plugged into the wall or using it from a full charge to empty.

Remember to check your battery and don’t just plug it in and forget it and expect the next time you go for a trip the battery will last 2+ hours. Batteries need some carring and remember, you can always replace them if you need or get a secondary one for that extra long trip. Checkout some great deals on laptop batteries as well as AC Adapters like the PA-10

Selecting the right kind of laptop is a difficult task as there are so many types of laptops such as netbooks, 17in laptops, and even more options then I could name. As laptops are costly, it can be disastrous if they are bought without any thought of how they will be used. This calls for the need to research a little bit before buying a laptop.

Search engines provide all the information regarding laptops, available brands, costs, features and their advantages within a few seconds. They provide information regarding the websites that sell good laptops all over the world.

Forums too provide valuable information if proper thread is followed. There are many people who write lot of informative articles and advice that may be really helpful while selecting a laptop.

Reviews are written by those who have used a product. Such reviews provide an insight on the product and its selection. Mistakes can be avoided if right decision is made by learning from their experience.

Many websites provide description of products, technical details, accessories that can be used along with the product etc. Knowledge is power. Understanding about the product will help in the right selection.

A laptop buying guide can be of great use. Such guides are available free of cost on the Internet or even got for a smaller fee. Since the purchase of laptops involves investing a considerable amount of hard earned money, it is better to got through a laptop guide. These guides help in assisting the customer in selecting the best laptop for him.
Even though there are huge varieties of laptops available, the selection of the laptop by the purchaser should match the need rather than buying through an impulse. Variations may be seen in the laptops depending on the processor speed and other additional features. The purchaser can however increase the memory capacity and other parts of the laptops according to his needs. The expectancy of the internal parts of the laptops may be limited, but if it is got from a reputed manufacturer or if the laptop is of a credible brand, the purchaser can be sure of the quality of the internal parts. The memory capacity requirement of the laptop depends on the operating system used on it. While selecting a laptop some of the essential built in additions needs to be checked are the USB ports, Network port, DVD burner, Bluetooth and Wireless features.

If you are looking to buy a laptop? Congratulations! So, do you want a thin-and-light notebook, a mainstream notebook, an ultra portable notebook, or a business notebook? And do you want that in a Dell, a Gateway, an IBM, a Sony, or a Toshiba, to name just a few of your options?

Confused yet? It really can be overwhelming. But buying a laptop doesn’t have to mean learning a whole new language. It just means that you have to know what your needs are and what kinds of equipment is best suited to meeting those needs. Ask yourself the following two questions:

1. How am I going to use this machine?

The demands you anticipate placing on a machine will dictate how much memory you need, processor speed, display size, and the size of your hard drive. It also matters how much wear and tear you think you’re going to put on your laptop. For example, are you going to be schlepping it from college room to coffee shop, or are you mostly going to be using it at home, as a replacement for a desktop machine? Are you going to be storing lots of digital music files or photos or other multimedia that will eat up huge amounts of hard drive space? Do you need wireless capability and lots of peripherals, like CD-RW drives or DVD drives? Are you going to be doing graphics work or watching a lot of video on your laptop, such that a powerful, rapid processor and a large and high-resolution screen are important to you?

2. How do I find the laptop that will do what I want?

Thinner is not always better; but then, less is sometimes more. In the laptop jungle, searching out the perfect machine can be a challenge. It might help to look at the different models of laptop and see what features each one has to offer.

* Ultraportables
These machines are thin, small, and light typically not more than four pounds. What they don’t have going for them is a lot of processing power or the bells and whistles of bigger systems: they don’t have internal CD or DVD drives, they have smallish hard drives, and they have displays of 12 inches or smaller. A good choice for someone on the go a lot who doesn’t demand a lot of their system, but performance lags behind other laptop models.

* Thin-and-lights
Perfect for business travelers, these laptops have powerful internal processors, 14-inch displays, and wireless networking capability, plus a combo CD-RW/DVD drive. They have lots of memory and roomy hard drives. Trade-off: they weigh a bit more (four to six pounds) and they cost quite a bit more.

* Mainstream notebooks
Basically, these laptops are desktop computers that can do a little travel. At six to eight pounds, they come with a 14-inch or larger display and more than enough basic power, in terms of processing speed, memory, and hard drive space.

* Desktop replacements
The name says it all: these laptops think they’re desktops. They have 15-inch to 17-inch monitors, more than big enough for gaming or creating home movies. They have the fastest processors, the largest hard drives, and the most memory of any other laptop available. And they weigh at least seven pounds.

Knowing at least some of the terminology should help you carry on intelligent conversations with laptop salespeople. And remember: because technology changes so fast, you’ll never have to be stuck with a dud laptop for more than two years!

Businesses have been using tape to back up their data since the early days of computing. Tape has its limitations, but it was much cheaper than the alternatives, so its use continued.

Today, the situation is changing. The price of disk storage has come down dramatically and the performance, longevity and use characteristics of disk are far superior to tape. As a result, many businesses are looking to move away from tape for their backup and disaster recovery needs.

The key requirements of an ideal backup scheme are:

1. It must be economical. Large amounts of data need to be accommodated (due to the need to keep multiple versions of the data), but in many cases the data will never be accessed. Its contribution to the companyís bottom line only comes if the data is needed, otherwise, it is an unnecessary expense.

2. It must be reliable over the long term. Some data must be stored for long periods of time, perhaps decades in some situations, to meet regulatory and business needs. If that data is ever needed it must be readable and accessible. When tape sits unused for a long period, it gets brittle and is prone to breaking and data loss.

3. It must be quick and easy to set up and operate. Back-up windows are getting tighter as the hours of operation increase and the amount of data continues to grow. As a result, the speed of the backup is critically important. If the backup process can be automated, human errors and costs are reduced.

4. Restoring data, either individual files or a whole system, must be quick, easy and reliable. Today, it can take a long time to retrieve tapes from their offsite storage. Data on tape is stored sequentially so access to specific records can be cumbersome. Reading the tapes can be problematic if the tape is old, brittle or distorted. All this uses precious IT resources that would be better spent elsewhere. Disk storage has none of these issues.

Everybody, it looks like, has a laptop today, and if you don’t have one, you most likely are thinking of buying one. As if it’s not difficult enough to choose from the many types and brands of laptops out there, you are also confronted with the many accessories that are available for one to. Of the overwhelmingly large amount of accessories out there, it can be certainly overwhelming to figure out what you really need for your laptop. Clearly, it is completely dependent upon your needs and plans with your computer, but there are five essentials you may want to consider to start with first.

Laptop Essential 1: If you are planning to use your laptop at home with any kind of regularity, you will want to consider getting an external keyboard and pointing device (mouse). Why? Well, believe me, if you have ever tried typing on a laptop for any more than an hour, then without a doubt you know that your neck, shoulders, and wrists can start to feel wiped out, to say the least. Well, the solution is to buy an external keyboard, which you can plug into the back of your laptop, as well as a mouse. And if you use your laptop in the office you can raise the screen up with books or risers of some sort to make looking at the screen a little more ergonomic. Of course you can also purchase accessory swivel stands for your laptop as well if you want them.

Laptop Essential 2: When your home you will most likely want to connect other peripheral devices to your laptop, like a printer, maybe a DVD player, or even a CD burner. This can create a lot of clutter with all the wires you need to plug in and unplug if you want to take your laptop out of the house or move room to room or even take it to the office. So to resolve this problem, you will absolutely love a docking station.

Now a docking station basically turns your laptop into a desktop computer when you’re home and when you’re ready to take it away, you simply slip it out of the station and off you go.

Another alternative along the same lines is a port replicator, which has computer ports. You connect your external devices to the replicator and then to your laptop. When you want to move your laptop, you simply detach the one port replicator, rather than each external device.

Laptop Essential 3: Now this isn’t as exciting as some of the other accessories, but I assure you, you will be thankful you have it, and that is an external hard drive. It’s certainly not going to make your day, and it certainly won’t throw any excitement in your life, but the morning you wake up and your laptop won’t start will be the day you are overjoyed that you decided to get that external hard drive.

Here’s a little tip to go along with your new external hard drive: never pack your backup drive and your laptop in the same case when going on a trip, keep them separated. If you happen to lose your bag with both the backup drive and the laptop in it, you’re going to have a really bad day!

Laptop Essential 4: This little device will allow you to hook up everything you need. So make sure you go out and get yourself an external USB hub. Desktop computers sometimes come with several USB ports, some with as many as 8 or 9. But, laptops since they are smaller, often only have a couple of USB ports. USB hubs will usually have four or more ports that will connect through one of your laptop’s USB port making them very easy to use to hook up multiple USB devices.

Laptop Essential 5: You need to think about the worst thing that can happen with your laptop. Now you probably bought your laptop so you can work out of the office, or your home, or wherever you need to, right? Well, since you will be out and about, you will definitely want to think about insurance for your laptop. The manufacturer’s warranty usually doesn’t cover anything beyond parts, and an extended warranty will certainly not cover theft, though it may cover you for breakage or fire.

Finally, there are literally thousands of different accessories available for your computer. Of course some you might need and others you won’t. It really depends on what your plans are for your laptop as well as where you plan on using it. Another thought depending on how much you commute with your laptop is to pickup an extra power adapter for your laptop. Nevertheless, these five things are indispensable to making your laptop as functional to you as possible. While there may be some variation to what you need, most of these items will be valuable to anyone who owns a laptop, no matter how you expect to use your portable computer.

Laptop Batteries are essential for keeping a laptop running properly. In many cases, businesses, whether personal or corporate, depend on laptops for business dealings day to day. There are a number of ways to properly care and maintain a laptops main power source, the battery. Battery construction of laptop batteries is very different from other traditional electronic device batteries. A brief overview of the construction of laptop batteries will help provide insight into factors that affect the life and care of laptop batteries.

Laptop batteries are constructed with a number of crucial components to regulate charge and power supply to the laptop. A thermistor measures the charge of the battery and regulates how much charge the laptop sends to the battery. When the battery is fully charged, the thermistor tells the laptop to stop charging. Safety fuses and breakers in the laptop battery also help prevent overcharging and aid in overall functionality of the laptop battery. So there is an essential communication that must occur between the components of the laptop battery and the laptop itself to ensure proper function of both the computer and the power supply.

Laptop batteries are becoming more advanced that other types of batteries. In the past they were constructed of NiCd or NiMH which provided less power and did not recharge well. Lithium polymer batteries are the newest revelation in battery technology and they are leaps and bounds beyond old metal batteries. They provide the right amount of power and charge in a fraction of the time of metal batteries. The advantages of lithium batteries make new laptop batteries more practical. Lithium batteries therefore help improve the life of laptop batteries and also make them a more valuable battery for the money.

There are a number of precautions to take to ensure safe and practical function of the laptop battery. Some laptop batteries can become overheated from charging which can create a fire hazard. It is important to place the laptop battery in a location that is free of flammable objects such as paper or furnishings. In general, it is good to avoid extreme temperatures for proper optimal function of a laptop battery. Battery life of a laptop battery depends greatly on how the laptop is used. A laptop battery will not last very long without being charged. A useful method to extend battery life is to close as many unnecessary programs as possible.

When was the last time your computer or the internet or life for that matter was working too good? Never right? My point is that we stop being successful in anything that we do if we sit back and let things come to us. There is no secret way to have success without working for it. The work is to always be improving. So what does this have to do with computers and memory upgrade?

Well for one thing life in general is getting more and more to be computer run. If you don’t update your technology or do memory upgrade fast enough you can be in the “dark ages,” before you notice. Even personal computers have large hard drives and very fast processor speeds, and it is making a huge difference in the productivity of people in this day and age. Whether you are a internet shopper, or a database guru, or a writer, or gamer, or researcher, the tools that you have with computers are essential to doing the amount of work that you are able to do.

So how do you improve your productivity? Well there are three basic ways that come to mind: 1) buy the latest and greatest computer on the market to get all of the newest technologies, 2) you can make sure a virus isn’t causing problems, 3) memory upgrade — go out and buy extra memory and either put it yourself for free (not recommended) or let an expert do it, or 4) you can buy software that can analyze your computer make suggestions, changes, repairs, etc. in order to increase efficiency. It is this last method that I want to talk about more.

Basically efficiency software is the best overall option for several reasons. First it is cheaper than buying all new equipment or even buying extra memory cards (especially if you are having someone install them for you). This kind of “memory upgrade”–that is buying efficiency software–is also a heck of a lot easier. Basically if you can put a CD into a CD-drive you can run this software. It automatically searches and analyze your entire system and it does all this fast. It also stays on your computer and suggests things to increase efficiency in your every day operations. It really is like hiring your own 24-7 support tech. It allows you to avoid all the hassles of going out and buying another system, then setting it all up the way you want it and need it, then transferring all of your valuable information to it, and on and on. You don’t have to learn how to build a computer and find out where the memory cards go. You don’t have to risk zapping a motherboard with a simple thing like static electricity. Take it from me, it saves you a lot of time and hassle.

So if this alternative to memory upgrade sounds good to you, you should do a search either for memory upgrade or for efficiency software. There is a wealth of information waiting for you to learn and to make the correct decision in this battle against time we call productivity.

Many people sell their used computers for a variety of reasons. Some sell their used computer instead of throwing them as a trash get some money from them, while others sell their used computers to buy new computers with the latest features and technology. Not only individuals sell their used computers, but also large numbers of organizations or firms sell their used computers. They do so because the computer systems may require maintenance and repairs, after some time due to the decrease in performance seen in the computers after some years. Instead of spending more money on the maintenance and repairs they sell and gain money, as there is a great demand for used computers. Such companies easily sell their used computers online through auctions or exchange for new computers with less effort in no time. Remember if you are buying a used computer, you may need to update or buy a new battery if you plan to use it on the go. For some great deals on laptop batteries, checkout Portable Components.

Used computers are bought by either students who can’t afford the top of the line or by some parents their children just for browsing the Internet and to play games. For this purpose, a used computer is more than sufficient than spending huge amounts of money on a new computer. These target segments however require used computers in a good working condition as well as for a lesser price. Most of the used computers are sold in the online market, as it attracts all sorts of buyers. There are many numbers of online classifieds or auctions or online dealers who sell used computers. Selling used computers are a better option than throwing them as trash or keeping them in a corner occupying space and collecting dust.

The first and important step is to improve the appearance of the used computer by wiping it clean free of dust and dirt. Any buyer would get impressed by the way the computer looks, looks make the first impression. The selling price of a clean used computer is always better than the one, which is full of dirt and dust.
All the software manual, operating system and other supporting discs that came with the computer should be in tact. This will add more value, when selling the used computer and also will make the buyer consider the person who is selling the used computer as a trusted seller.

The most important thing to do before selling a used computer is to erase all the personal details or information from the hard disk or drive. Instead of just putting them in the trash folder it is very important to purge all the personal data from the computerís memory, even invisible backup files can cause danger. A tech savvy personís help can be got if the seller does not know how to do it. If not done it may lead to accessing the bank accounts, or emails by any unknown person leading to identity theft. For that when there is a remedy. Unused scanners, printers can also be bundled with the sale of the used computer. A buyer may sometime value it. The benefits or features of the computer can be highlighted for better sales.
